UAE will be the first Arab country to ban social media for children under 15

The United Arab Emirates announced this Thursday (18) a ban on the use of social networks by children under 15 years of age, joining a growing number of countries that have adopted similar measures.

According to a cabinet resolution, social media platforms must monitor and deactivate accounts created by children under 15 years of age. Otherwise, they may be blocked. The measure provides for a transition period of 12 months.

"The resolution establishes a minimum age of 15 years for the use of social networks", reported the official news agency WAM.
"It is prohibited for minors of this age to create, use or operate personal accounts on social media platforms", he added.

The Emirati bodies responsible for media and telecommunications have "the authority to take all necessary measures [against social media platforms in case of non-compliance]", WAM highlighted.
The measures include "warnings, partial or total blocking of platforms and imposition of appropriate administrative sanctions".
