The President of the United States, Donald Trump, threatened this Friday (26) to impose a 100% tariff on all products from any country that charges a tax on digital services from North American companies.

"Several European countries have been discussing the imminent implementation of a Digital Services Tax for American companies," Trump said in a social media post. "Some of these countries are close to actually doing this."

"Let this statement serve to make it clear that any country that imposes such a tax will be immediately penalized with a 100% TARIFF on all goods sent to the United States of America."

Trump said the new tariff would supersede any trade agreements with the United States, "whether implemented, signed or not."

Last week, hours before the meeting between the two at the G7 summit, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that France would not give in to pressure from Trump and would not revoke the digital tax on North American technology giants.

Before leaving for the summit in France, Trump had warned that the US would have "no choice" but to slap 100% tariffs on French wine unless Paris eliminated its digital tax.

Since 2019, France has applied a 3% tax on revenue from digital services earned by companies with revenues exceeding 25 million euros in the country and 750 million euros worldwide.
