Trump seems to confuse Flávio with Eduardo: "They arrested Bolsonaro Jr."

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, confused Flávio and Eduardo Bolsonaro when asked about relations with Brazil during the G7 Summit. Trump said they "arrested Bolsonaro Jr." and that he was doing well in the polls, in what appeared to be a reference to Eduardo's conviction by the STF.

Trump said that Brazil has become a dangerous country from a political point of view. "I heard that they arrested someone who is running for public office," said the American leader when asked about the interaction with Lula in Évian-les-Bains.

"I just said goodbye to him [Lula] and I heard that they arrested Bolsonaro Jr. He was doing well in the polls and they arrested him because he made a statement in Texas. They arrested him, or they want to arrest him to reveal something," he added.

"They play very hard. But nobody plays harder than the United States," concluded Trump, repeating, without providing evidence, the allegations that the US had stolen elections. "We had rigged elections," he said.

Trump seems to confuse Eduardo with Flávio when he says that "Bolsonaro Jr." was doing well in the polls. Flávio (PL) has 43% of voting intentions for the 2nd round, while Lula (PT) has increased his advantage with the revelation of the Dark Horse case and appears with 49%, according to the Nexus/BTG survey.

Former deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) was convicted this Tuesday (16) by the First Panel of the STF for the crime of coercion during the process that investigated an attempted coup d'état in Brazil. The sentence of 4 years and 2 months in prison must be served in a semi-open regime.

Unanimously, the ministers concluded that the former deputy worked with United States authorities to pressure members of the STF and try to interfere in the processes related to the attempted coup d'état after the 2022 elections, with the aim of benefiting Jair Bolsonaro. The conviction makes Eduardo ineligible for 12 years under the Clean Record Law.

In addition to ineligibility, the STF decreed the loss of Eduardo's effective position in the Federal Police and imposed a 50-day fine, worth two minimum wages each. The defense denied the crime of coercion and claimed that Alexandre de Moraes should be considered prevented from acting in the case because he was one of the authorities affected by American sanctions.

In response to Trump's statements, which classified Brazil as "politically dangerous", Lula stated that the American president may have his electoral and ideological preferences, but he must respect the sovereignty of nations.

"For me, he can continue to like Bolsonaro. His father, his son, his grandson. There's no problem. It's his problem. After all, taste can't be discussed. Now, don't get involved in Brazil's elections," declared Lula. "The only thing I want is respect for Brazil," he added.
