Trump says withdrawal of US troops from Europe depends on Greenland

President Donald Trump said this Wednesday (8) that the possibility of the United States withdrawing more troops from Europe "will depend on Greenland", but did not give details.

"I haven't made that final decision yet. A lot will depend on Greenland," he told reporters, adding that he would consider withdrawing troops "if we don't make a 'very good deal in Greenland'."

Trump has already mentioned in private conversations the possibility of withdrawing up to a third of American troops currently stationed in Europe. He has also repeatedly expressed a desire to take control of Greenland, a territory he claims is necessary for U.S. national security.

The Republican has expressed interest in purchasing the island or in having the United States take it through force or economic coercion, even as NATO ally Denmark and Greenland itself firmly reject the idea.

During the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, this week, Trump reiterated that he wants the territory, but hinted that he knows it could create problems for his relationship with the alliance.
