President Donald Trump declared on Thursday (2) that it is "ridiculous" that the United States continues with its "unilateral" relationship with NATO, less than a week before the Atlantic Alliance summit in Turkey. a new criticism of the transatlantic alliance with the Europeans, which has been tense for a few months due to disputes between the North American president and the rest of the member countries. Issues such as the balance of financial contributions from each country and an attack by Washington against Greenland have strained this relationship.
More recently, Trump has repeatedly attacked European partners for their response to the war against Iran, as several countries have restricted the use of bases for American forces.
He also insists that Europe must take a greater role in its own defense. Washington has already begun reducing its commitments to partners.
In his Thursday message, Trump included a chart showing the volume of NATO spending, with the United States investing much more than some other member states represented.
Under pressure from Washington, alliance leaders agreed at a meeting last year to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035.
The next NATO summit, which will bring together 32 Member States, will take place in Ankara between 7 and 8 July.
