The president of the United States, Donald Trump, stated that Greenland should be controlled by the USA, and not by Denmark, this Tuesday (7), during the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey.

The new statement on the issue, which has been made by Trump since his re-election to the US presidency, was made during a brief briefing by the American before a bilateral meeting between him and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
"That's what hurt my relationship with NATO, because Greenland doesn't help Denmark. Denmark doesn't spend money to actually help Greenland, but it's an important part of the United States, and it's surrounded by Chinese and Russian ships. And that's not going to happen. They don't want to collaborate, despite all the money we spend to support them against Russia", said Trump, criticizing the Danish government.

In a speech during the summit, shortly after Trump's speech, Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, once again stated that the country will not give up the island, which is its autonomous territory. He said he expected allies to respect Denmark's sovereignty and "accept that Greenland is not for sale".
In June, the American Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, stated that talks with Denmark and Greenland were continuing and that negotiations were taking place monthly.

Greenland is an autonomous territory linked to the Kingdom of Denmark and is home to the American space base of Pituffik, used by the USA for military and space monitoring.
In May, the president of the United States posted an image in which he appears "holding" Greenland, accompanied by the phrase "Hello, Greenland!" ("Hello, Greenland!"), in yet another public demonstration of interest in the Arctic territory controlled by Denmark.
Since returning to the White House, Trump has resumed the speech, which he had already defended in his first term, that the US should take control over the island.
In January, he stated that Greenland is essential for American national security in the face of the advance of Russia and China in the Arctic, and for the construction of its anti-missile shield project, the Golden Dome.
In February, faced with increased pressure from the US, NATO announced the launch of a mission to reinforce its military and surveillance capabilities in the Arctic.
