"Trump reached a good deal" with Iran, says NATO secretary general

The Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, stated this Thursday (18) that he welcomes the memorandum signed between the United States and Iran.

"I welcome the agreement. I think President Trump reached a good deal," Rutte told reporters in Brussels, ahead of a meeting of the military alliance's defense ministers.

According to him, the memorandum will help reduce Iran's nuclear capacity and restore freedom of navigation in the region.

The peace plan, made up of 14 points and signed by the United States and Iran, ends the clashes between the two countries and paves the way for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The document also includes Tehran's commitment not to acquire or develop nuclear weapons, although broader questions related to Iran's nuclear program remain unanswered.

Rutte added that ensuring navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is not under the direct responsibility of NATO. Still, he stated that the alliance will be able to collaborate if requested.

"If NATO can play a role, then, of course, we are always willing to help," he declared.

As CNN showed, on Wednesday (17), during a dinner at the Palace of Versailles, US President Donald Trump officially signed a copy of the agreement between the United States and Iran. Later, the Iranian state news agency IRNA released images of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signing the agreement.

After the signing, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman said the memorandum of understanding was "officially finalized", Iranian state news agency IRIB reported.

"It was agreed that the Iran-US memorandum of understanding would be signed digitally," IRIB quoted Baghaei as saying, adding that while there are plans for negotiating teams to be in Geneva, there will be no signing ceremony in Switzerland.
