Trump met with advisers in Türkiye before ordering strikes on Iran

US President Donald Trump spent part of the day Tuesday (7) in Turkey meeting with his top advisers to discuss a response to the Iranian attack on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, according to people familiar with the conversations.

Before a leaders' dinner hosted by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Trump met with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine to formulate a response, including U.S. strikes against Iranian targets.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is also in Türkiye and discussed with Trump revoking the sanctions waiver that allowed Iran to sell oil.

During dinner, Trump had a private conversation with the secretary general of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), Mark Rutte. The following morning, this Wednesday (8), Rutte stated that military action was "absolutely necessary" upon arriving at the NATO summit, considered of high importance.

"When there is a ceasefire and Iran is basically violating it, we saw what happened yesterday with the attacks on ships, I think it is completely crucial that the United States reacts firmly," Rutte said.

According to Rutte, the Iranian nuclear program will be on the agenda of NATO's main session this Wednesday. "I hope allies reaffirm today that Iran must never obtain a nuclear capability," he said.

Trump has expressed frustration with what he considers Iran's violations of the memorandum of understanding signed exactly three weeks ago. Tehran, in turn, also accuses the United States of repeatedly failing to comply with the agreement.

Iran's main negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who also holds the position of president of Parliament, listed the main violations of the ceasefire agreement by the United States, in the early hours of Wednesday, after an exchange of attacks between the countries.
