Trump appoints ally nicknamed 'watchdog' to head National Intelligence

United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday named Bill Pulte, head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) and close ally, as director acting National Intelligence Officer.
"William has extensive experience in managing the most sensitive issues in the United States, such as the security and soundness of the markets," said Trump in a post on his Truth Social platform.
The US president added that his chosen one would also continue to perform his duties related to the housing sector. Pulte leads refinancing giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Pulte was named interim director to replace Tulsi Gabbard, who resigned at the end of May after her February 2025 appointment already sparked controversy. Her last 15 months in office were marked by positions differing from those of Trump in relation to the conflict with Iran.

Pulte, 38 years old, is known for her staunch defense of Trump, including public attacks on his detractors, which earned her the nickname, in some local media outlets, as the president's "watchdog".
