Trump and Putin agreed to talk in the 'near future', says Kremlin

The Kremlin reported on Monday (6) that Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump agreed, during a telephone conversation over the weekend, to speak again "in the near future", suggesting that they will likely talk this week, during or after the NATO summit.

Trump plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday (8) in Turkey, where he will attend the NATO summit, a senior US official said on Sunday (5). The idea, according to the authority, was to make a new effort to end the war in Ukraine.

The same official said Trump would likely speak to Putin again after speaking with Zelensky.

Asked on Monday whether Trump would call Putin after meeting with Zelensky, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: "Yes, indeed, both President Putin and President Trump agreed that their contacts will continue in the near future."

Peskov said Trump has maintained a fairly consistent position on the conflict in Ukraine.

"You know, President Trump, the president of the United States, has a pretty consistent stance, and all these fabrications about him supposedly changing his mind like a weather vane are obviously false," Peskov said.

"He is consistent and is confident in his understanding of what is happening, but most importantly, he (Trump) is open to listening to the information given to him by Putin," he added.
