Trump accuses Brazil of forced labor in livestock farming, but exempts beef from new tariff

The United States accuses Brazil of using forced labor in livestock production and proposes to apply additional tariffs of 12.5% to countries that fail to ban the import of goods produced with forced labor.
Despite this, beef is included in the list of products that should be exempt from the measure.
The proposal was announced this Tuesday (2), after an investigation by the American government concluded that 60 countries, including Brazil, do not adopt measures they consider sufficient to block the entry of products made with forced labor.
The list also includes China, which is the largest buyer of Brazilian meat.
The document that supports the new tariff proposal contains a specific chapter relating Brazilian livestock farming to slave labor, and suggesting that this was one of the factors that caused the drop in exports of frozen meat from the USA to China.
"It is widely documented that forced labor is used in livestock production in Brazil", says the report.
"China's failure to impose and effectively enforce a ban on the import of frozen beef produced with forced labor in Brazil conferred a cost advantage on Brazilian beef and distorted competition", he highlighted.
