Truck accident kills 20 people in Afghanistan

Twenty people, including 12 children, died after the truck they were traveling in overturned this Saturday (30), in eastern Afghanistan. The information was disclosed to AFP by the spokesman for the governor of Laghman province, Abdul Malik Niazay.
The vehicle was transporting Afghan families returning from Pakistan. The accident happened on the highway that connects Jalalabad, in the east of the country, to the capital Kabul.

"A truck overturned and 20 people died," said the spokesperson on Saturday afternoon. The victims included five women, three men and 12 children. Another 33 people were injured.
Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said he was "deeply saddened" by the tragedy.
Recently, Pakistan toughened its policy towards Afghan migrants and refugees living in its territory.
Since the beginning of the year, 447,400 Afghans have returned from Pakistan, according to data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Traffic accidents are frequent in Afghanistan due to the poor condition of the roads, affected by decades of conflicts, in addition to reckless driving and limited inspection on the roads.
