TRE-RJ demands parties not to register candidates linked to crime

The TRE-RJ (Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro) demanded, this Friday (10), that political parties carry out a careful analysis of the candidates and avoid launching names with suspected links to organized crime.

The president of the court, judge Cláudio de Mello Tavares, stated during a meeting with representatives of political parties that the Court will act rigorously in analyzing candidacy records and inspecting irregular advertisements.

"Society can no longer tolerate so much insecurity. This court will rigorously analyze all requests for registration of candidacies, especially from candidates who have links to drug trafficking or militias", said Tavares.

The statement comes after three parliamentarians from Rio de Janeiro were arrested by the Federal Police on suspicion of involvement with criminal organizations.

Former state deputy TH Joias was arrested in September 2025, followed by the former president of the Legislative Assembly of Rio, Rodrigo Bacellar, in December of the same year, and by state deputy Thiago Rangel, in May 2026. State deputy Val Ceasa was the target of search and seizure in June.

"We will act rigorously. It is up to you, as the first line of defense for the legitimacy of the electoral process, to carefully purify and evaluate the names submitted", concluded the president of TRE-RJ.

Representatives from the parties Agir, Avante, Cidadania, DC, Democrats, Mobiliza, Novo, PDT, PL, Podemos, PP, PRD, PSB, PSD, PSOL, PT, PV, Republicans, Solidariedade and União Brasil participated in the meeting.

The period of party conventions, when the acronyms define the candidates for the presidential, state, Chamber of Deputies and Senate elections, takes place from July 20th to August 5th. Candidacy registration requests must be submitted to the Electoral Court by August 15th.
