"Toy Story": Find out more about the animation released in 1995
One of the most classic animations aimed at children, "Toy Story", turns 31 in 2026.
About to reach its fifth feature, the story of Woody, Buzz and the toy gang is one of Pixar and Disney's most famous franchises.
This week, a new film hits theaters, leaving aside the role of the sheriff to put the cowgirl Jessie, who made her debut in the story in the second film, at the center.
The animation was one of the first to use entirely computer-generated imagery and was created by creative director John Lasseter.
The production premiered on November 22, 1995 and was a success: it raised around R$1.5 billion. Actor Tom Hanks has been the official voice of Woody in the American version since the first film.
Learn a little more about the history of each animation in the franchise.
"Toy Story 1" (1995)
The boy Andy's birthday is approaching and his toys are nervous, fearing that he will get new ones that could replace them. Led by cowboy Woody, Andy's favorite toy, they receive Buzz Lightyear, a space ranger doll, who soon begins to receive more attention from the boy.
The film brings a subtle criticism to the obsolescence of products, in this case toys, which are quickly replaced by more technological items. But having LED lights and battery-powered talking doesn't always make the game better.

"Toy Story 2" (1999)
When Woody is stolen by a toy collector, Buzz and his friends go on a mission to rescue him before he ends up in a museum.
The idea of the film is to criticize the mass production of toys and artisanal production, by opposing Buzz, a toy that is mass-made (and which comes across several copies), with Woody, who turns out to be a collector's item.

"Toy Story 3" (2010)
Woody and the gang are mistakenly given to a daycare center and have to fight their way back to Andy's house, who is preparing to start university. Therefore, they plan a great escape with the help of the sheriff, the only toy chosen by Andy for the new phase.
In this cartoon, the big point is aging: Andy stops being a child and toys stop being important to him, but they can make other people happy.

"Toy Story 4" (2019)
The gang needs to protect the new toy Forky joins Woody and the gang, but the character keeps trying to escape the toys' new owner, Bonnie.
In this, there is a deeper reflection on existence: fork, because it was made with recycled materials, considers itself more trash than a toy, and has difficulty accepting its new state.

"Toy Story 5" (2026)
Buzz and Jessie have become the new protagonists of Bonnie's toy room in Woody's absence, but are challenged by the appearance of a tablet, presented as a villain in the film. The criticism is more obvious: how technology has taken over the space of more traditional games and the impacts of this on children.
