Tourist wins compensation after losing 'race for sunbeds' at hotel in Greece

A German tourist won compensation of more than 900 euros (about R$5,100) after being unable to secure a sun lounger due to other guests reserving them with towels.
The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, was on holiday in Greece with his family in 2024 and said he was passing by 20 minutes a day trying to find a sunbed despite waking up at 06:00.
He then sued his tour operator for allowing the reservation system, arguing that sunbeds were reserved so frequently that they became unusable.
Judges at a district court in Hanover ruled in his favor and said the family of four were entitled to a larger refund of their holiday package because it had been "defective".

The man had paid 7,186 euros to take his wife and two children on a package trip to Kos, an island in Greece. 06:00, there were no sun loungers available, and their children were forced to lie on the floor.
Although the tour operator initially paid a refund of 350 euros (about R$2,000), judges in Hanover ruled that the family was entitled to a refund of 986.70 euros (about R$5,600).
They stated that although the travel company did not manage the hotel and could not guarantee that all customers had access to a sunbed at any time, the operator had an obligation to ensure that there was an organizational structure that ensured a "reasonable" ratio of sunbeds per guest.
Many tourists will have encountered the "sunbed wars" or the "dawn rush" on holiday, which is the practice of reserving sunbeds with towels.
Last year, videos circulating on social media suggested that tourists in Tenerife (Spain) they were sleeping on sun loungers to secure a place by the pool.
In Spain, tourists in certain regions were threatened with a fine of 250 euros (around R$1,400) for reserving a sun lounger and then disappearing for hours.
