Tomás Paiva: The institutional problem is that of democracy, in which we participate
The commander of the Brazilian Army, General Tomás Paiva, states that it is not up to the Armed Forces to interfere in the balance between the Powers of the Republic, regardless of crises: "the institutional problem is our democracy, the system of checks and balances, and we are not the ones who are going to solve this institutional problem. We are participants in it."
The statement was made during participation in WW Talks, which in this edition addressed structural themes about the Defense of Brazil, with the participation of General Tomás Paiva. The commander claims that the military remained firm to the Constitution in the most turbulent political episodes since redemocratization.
"So we see that the constitutional system of checks and balances is capable of resolving the institutional crises that we have historically had serious. We had a president's impeachment and we followed the Constitution twice. We had other institutional crises, we experienced an institutional crisis in the transition - it was not an institutional crisis, but we maintained our stance", said the general.
Tomás Paiva took command of the Army at the beginning of 2023 and from the beginning, he emphasized the defense of legality, military discipline and the subordination of the Armed Forces to civil power: "so, this commitment to the democratic order is a very important value for the Brazilian State to find, within its Constitution and within its system of constitutional checks and balances, the solutions to the institutional crises that we may have", stated Paiva.
Also participating in this edition were Thais Heredia, Caio Junqueira and Silvio Cascione, director in Brazil of the Eurasia consultancy.
