Thousands of protesters take to the streets in Albania to demand prime minister's resignation

Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets of Tirana on Saturday (4) demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama's government and systematic reforms in Albania.

The demonstration, part of what activists call the "Flamingo Revolution", saw crowds waving Albanian flags and chanting "Revolution" as they marched through the capital.

The protests began over a luxury resort project linked to Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, but have since transformed into a movement against corruption and the political system.

"So we live in a country where corruption is at the top of the hierarchy," said protester Gjuljana Shoshi.

The project, estimated to cost around 5 billion euros, has sparked outrage in the Balkan country due to its location near a protected wetland area that is home to flamingos, seals and sea turtle nesting sites.
