The Pentagon needs US$80 billion to cover the costs of the war against Iran, which ended this week after almost four months of conflict, and other military expenses, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. The value would have been informed by US Deputy Secretary of Defense, Stephen Feinberg, to US parliamentarians. The value is almost three times higher than the estimate released by the Pentagon in May, of US$ 29 billion.
On Wednesday (17), presidents Donald Trump and Masoud Pezeshkian signed the peace agreement in the Middle East war after four months of conflict.
American parliamentarians are concerned about the costs of the war that began in February and would be pressuring the government to present the total value, with details of expenses. There is also concern that the military would have used valuable ammunition that would be important to the US in other operations.
According to the newspaper, Pentagon leaders had already announced that resources were running out and that the country could be left without assistance this summer (in the Northern Hemisphere) if Congress did not approve an emergency spending law for the war. The statement warned that the Armed Forces would have to reduce military training exercises and other priorities.
In recent months, the military has seen a significant increase in costs due to the various operations in which the USA is involved, such as the capture of the then president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and the attacks on vessels in the Pacific Ocean, in an operation against drug trafficking.

Also according to the Wall Street Journal, a supplementary request for resources, with funds for the Pentagon and other Defense demands, could be sent to parliamentarians in the coming days. The Pentagon's 2026 annual budget is $1 trillion, and any increase would need to be approved by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), the body responsible for analyzing federal spending, before going to Congress.
For the sources heard by the newspaper, the Pentagon demonstrated confidence in the plan that the deputy secretary of Defense would have communicated to the parliamentarians with whom he spoke in recent days. These calls would have taken place in parallel with meetings between the Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, and Republican senators. Hegseth reportedly mentioned new funding requests.
If the government actually makes the request, it may face resistance, with some congressmen already declaring that they will vote against it.
