The only Corinthians player called up for the World Cup, Dutchman Memphis Depay is qualified for the second phase of the competition. The top scorer in the history of the Dutch national team is not a member of the team, but he participated in the three group stage matches and is one of the leaders of the Clockwork Orange squad.
Recovering from an injury on the eve of the World Cup, Memphis participated in the Netherlands' last friendlies before the World Cup. The striker started in the 1-0 defeat to Algeria, but ended up not leaving the bench in the 2-1 victory over Uzbekistan.
In the World Cup, Memphis played 51 of the 270 possible minutes in the group stage. In the Netherlands' debut, in a 2-2 draw with Japan, the Corinthians player received a yellow card, but improved his performance in the following round, providing an assist in the 5-1 victory over Sweden. Practically classified, the striker only entered the final 13 minutes of the 3-1 victory over Tunisia, in the third round.

Coming off the bench, Memphis is the main option for any of the three positions in Holland's attack. So far, Gakpo, Brobbey and Malen are responsible for half of the team's goals in the World Cup.
Leader of Group F, the Netherlands are now preparing to face Morocco in the second phase of the World Cup. The two teams enter the field this Monday, at 10pm (Brasília time), at the BBVA Stadium, in Monterrey, Mexico.
Almost missed out
After dealing with injuries during the season, Memphis Depay's participation in the World Cup was not guaranteed. Between March and May, the Corinthians striker suffered an injury to his biceps femoris, which ruled him out of 11 matches.
On the eve of the World Cup, the striker recovered and made a gradual return, with limited minutes against Atlético-MG and Platense. Corinthians and Memphis' planning worked, and the striker ended up being one of the 26 called up by Ronald Koeman.
