"Tela Brasil": find out when free streaming starts working

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) announced the launch of "Tela Brasil", which will reach Brazilians next Saturday (30). The streaming platform intends to offer a free, public service in the form of a "Brazilian Netflix".

According to Lula, around 500 national films will be made available for the Brazilian population to access on television. "It's our Netflix, our Brazilian Netflix", said the president.

The platform will be coordinated by the federal government through the Ministry of Culture. The proposal will bring together national films, documentaries and short films. Furthermore, one of the focuses of the initiative will be to disseminate independent productions.

To make the works available in a digital environment free of charge, the project foresees an initial investment of R$4.2 million. So far, the catalog has 447 film titles.

Given the barriers faced by national audiovisual, the expectation is that the new platform will strengthen the market. In parallel, projects are being processed in the National Congress to regularize streaming platforms.

In recent years, the audiovisual sector, including filmmakers, screenwriters, producers and audiovisual technicians, have mobilized against the dismantling of the national audiovisual industry and in favor of the platforms' contribution to the national cinema market.
