Iranian authorities reported that 1.3 million passengers took more than 3 million subway trips in Tehran overnight as the second day of funeral ceremonies for the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei began.

It is unclear what normal traffic levels are in the city, but previous estimates put daily passenger volumes at around 2 million.

"From midnight until 9 am today, 1,308,445 passengers made more than 3 million trips on the Tehran metro," the Tehran Metro Operation Company reported this Sunday (5), according to the Iranian news agency Fars (linked to the state).

The company, which manages the city's metro system, added that more than 6 million metro trips were also recorded on Saturday (4), the first day of the funeral ceremonies, according to the Fars agency.

CNN cannot independently verify the numbers.

Iran's Health Ministry said around 15 million people were expected to attend Khamenei's funeral ceremonies in the coming days, according to Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency.
