Syria and Iraq close airspace after Iran attack on Israel

The authorities of Syria and Iraq announced, on Sunday night (7), the temporary closure of their airspaces following the launch of ballistic missiles by Iran against Israel.

According to the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority, Iraqi airspace will be closed for the next 72 hours.

Syrian aviation authorities reported an initial 12-hour closure, including the suspension of operations at Damascus International Airport until 11am on Monday (8), local time.

Earlier, the Israel Defense Forces claimed to have detected ballistic missiles launched by Iran towards Israeli territory. According to the military, two projectiles were intercepted.

Shortly afterwards, Israel warned of new missile salvos and advised residents of the north of the country to remain close to shelters.

The Israeli government announced that schools will remain closed across the country on Monday, following the interception of missiles from Iran. The Israeli Rear Command also advised the population to remain close to shelters, given the possibility of a serious escalation of the conflict between Israel and Iran.

An Israeli source told CNN that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would call a security meeting in response to the incident.

Last week, Iran threatened to attack Israel directly if the country carried out attacks on Beirut. Earlier this Sunday, Israel attacked the Lebanese capital in response to Hezbollah fire on northern Israel.

Iranian deputy Ebrahim Rezaei wrote in X that there would be a "decisive and painful response" to the attack on the Dahiyeh neighborhood in Beirut, considered a Hezbollah stronghold.

Moments before the IDF issued the warning about Iranian missiles, the military had warned of the possibility of "fire towards the State of Israel in the coming hours".
