Switzerland dominates, beats Algeria and advances to the round of 16 of the World Cup

Switzerland beat Algeria 2-0 in the early hours of this Friday (3), in Vancouver, and qualified for the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.

Right at the beginning of the game, Breel Embolo pushed the ball into the net and opened the scoring in the match held at BC Place. Then, in the second stage, Dan Ndoye took advantage of the defense's mistake and declared the European triumph in Canada.

Now, the Swiss await the definition of their next opponent in the tournament, which will come from the duel between Colombia and Ghana. In a possible quarterfinal match, coach Murat Yakin's team could face Argentina, the current world champion.

The best of Switzerland's World Cup campaigns came in the 1934, 1938 and 1954 editions, when they reached the quarter-finals. Algeria, eliminated in the current round of 16, stopped in the round of 16 in 2014, against Germany.

At the beginning of the match, Algeria tried its first attack in the sixth minute, with a shot from midfielder Houssem Aouar that was weak. Already at 10, midfielder Johan Manzambi accelerated, passed the marking and rolled the ball for center forward Breel Embolo to push into the net: Switzerland ahead in Vancouver.

In stoppage time, the Algerians gave another scare with an attempt by midfielder Ibrahim Maza, who went to the left of the opponent's goal. Switzerland, in turn, increased the difference on the scoreboard after the break. The African team's defense cleared the ball and the ball went to winger Dan Ndoye, who hit the corner and made it 2-0.

The Algerian team responded little, with a shot from winger Riyad Mahrez that stopped on target. In the 36th minute, Zakaria invaded the area and crossed at the second post. Midfielder Fabian Rieder appeared alone in the small area and sent a shot past goalkeeper Luca Zidane, wasting a huge chance to score.
