Sweden beats Tunisia and debuts with victory in the World Cup

Sweden defeated Tunisia 5-1 this Sunday (14), in a clash in the first round of the 2026 World Cup. The result left the European team at the top of the group, which still includes the Netherlands and Japan.

Yasin Ayari, who is the son of a Tunisian father, opened the scoring at the BBVA Stadium, in Monterrey. Then, Viktor Gyökeres and Alexander Isak scored once each and led to the Swedes' victory. Finally, Mattias Svanberg left his to close the account.

With the triumph, Sweden won their first three points in the World Cup and took first place in the group. In the next round, coach Graham Potter's team will face the Dutch team, in a duel that will take place next Saturday (20), at 2pm (Brasília time).

Just four minutes in, Sweden had their first opportunity with center forward Viktor Gyökeres, finishing over the opponent's goal. Shortly after, at six, goalkeeper Mouhib Chamakh barely cleared the danger and Gyökeres shot firmly, but the defense saved it. In the meantime, midfielder Yasin Ayari scored to open the scoring.

Behind in the match, Tunisia went on the attack in search of a draw. However, it was the Swedes who found the net once again. Gyökeres received it and gave a beautiful pass to striker Alexander Isak. He cut the mark and hit the corner to make it 2-0.

Before the break, the Tunisians managed to pull one back at the 43-minute mark. Midfielder Hannibal Mejbri crossed to the head of defender Omar Rekik, who tested it in the corner and made it 2-1.

In the second half, the Swedes scored their third goal in the 15th minute. Midfielder Ellyes Skhiri was disarmed by Isak, who rolled the ball for Gyökeres to cross and extend the advantage. The center forward himself had another opportunity at 20, but ended up missing.
