More than 20 people reported feeling unwell in the center of Tokyo, the capital of Japan, this Monday (25) after the use of a spray suspected of being irritating in a shopping center in the Ginza neighborhood, according to Japanese media reports.

Japanese media reported that 25 people complained of symptoms such as sore throat after using the spray. At least 19 were taken to hospital, Tokyo police told Japanese national broadcaster NHK.

The shopping center was isolated by emergency services after complaints of symptoms including coughing and sore throat.

Images from Japanese broadcaster Nippon TV showed dozens of rescuers at the establishment, one of them wearing a chemical protective suit cleaning what appeared to be a stain on a wall in the Ginza Six shopping complex.

A man was seen spraying an "unknown substance" around an ATM located on the first floor of the upscale shopping mall in Ginza, NHK added.

The case is investigated.
