Supreme Leader says he 'had a different opinion' but gave Iran permission to sign deal with US

Iran's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, said this Thursday (18) that he had given permission to the Iranian government to sign the peace agreement with the United States, although he initially did not agree with the plan.

Through a post on his social network, Khamenei made the first statement since the agreement was signed, on Wednesday (17), between the presidents of the United States, Donald Trump, and Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian.
"In principle, I had a different opinion (about the memorandum of understanding), but because of the commitment that the respectable President (...) made on behalf of himself and the members to preserve the rights of the Iranian nation and the resistance front, and which he clearly expressed in accepting responsibility for it, I granted the permission," declared the Iranian.
Khamenei also stated, in the post, that Trump acted in "desperation" to reach an agreement.
"On the way to reach this stage, those responsible, out of compassion and good intentions, made many efforts and it was the president of the United States who, out of desperation, used all kinds of levers to achieve this", he said.
The supreme leader did not comment on the next phase of negotiations, in which the US and Iran will discuss the Iranian nuclear program and must present a resolution within 60 days.

The agreement signed by the United States and Iran to end the war in the Middle East was officially released on Wednesday (17). The document has 14 points and includes guarantees that Tehran will never have nuclear weapons, the suspension of US sanctions against the country and financial compensation to the Iranian government.

US and Iran declare the immediate and permanent end of the war on all fronts, including in Lebanon, and commit not to initiate any conflict against each other and to guarantee Lebanese territorial integrity and sovereignty;
US and Iran commit to respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each other and not to interfere in each other's internal affairs;
US and Iran commit to conduct negotiations to reach a final agreement within 60 days, with a deadline extendable upon mutual consent;
US will lift its naval blockade of Iran and withdraw its military forces from the region around Iran within 30 days of signing the memorandum;
Iran will reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 30 days and commits to ensuring safe passage and no commercial ship charges for 60 days. Iran will also dialogue with Oman and other Persian Gulf countries on the future administration of the strait;
US commits, together with its regional partners, to create a program for the reconstruction and economic development of Iran, with minimum funding of US$300 billion;
US commits to end all types of sanctions against Iran, including UN Security Council resolutions, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors resolutions and all unilateral sanctions Americans;
Iran reaffirms that it will not produce or acquire nuclear weapons, and both parties agree to deal with the dilution of enriched uranium through an agreed mechanism and with IAEA supervision. US and Iran also agree to discuss the topic of enrichment and other nuclear issues in the future;
US and Iran agree to maintain the current status quo until they reach a final agreement: Iran will maintain its current nuclear policy; the US will not impose new sanctions or increase its military presence in the Middle East;
US commits to allowing Iran to trade its oil and petrochemical products;
US commits to fully release all Iranian assets and funds that were frozen or restricted by sanctions;
Both parties agree to establish an implementation mechanism to oversee the execution of this memorandum and future adherence to the final agreement;
Upon signing and beginning implementation of clauses 1, 4, 5, 10 and 11, negotiations on the final agreement will focus exclusively on the remaining clauses;
The final agreement will be ratified through a binding UN Security Council resolution within 60 days.
