Super El Niño is formed by space satellites; watch

The European Space Agency (ESA) released, this Monday (15), a video that shows the process of formation of the El Niño phenomenon.

The first signs of the phenomenon were recorded by satellites from space.

The record made by the agency shows sea surface temperature anomalies between June 1st and 7th, 2026, in relation to the average for the period from 1991 to 2020.

The ESA explains that anomalies, that is, the difference between current conditions and the long-term average, were used to analyze why the phenomenon usually begins as a subtle change in relation to what is considered "normal", and these initial changes are easier to identify when compared to a reference standard.

The analysis indicates that even though temperature differences may seem small, the ocean stores and exchanges enormous amounts of heat. Thus, slight warming may indicate significant changes in the energy transferred between the ocean and the atmosphere.

El Niño occurs when trade winds weaken, allowing warm waters from the western Pacific Ocean to move east, causing changes in wind patterns and ocean dynamics.

Global warming can increase the action of the phenomenon, resulting in more heat waves, droughts, intense rains and storms, with serious consequences for communities and economies.
