Sunderland wins, qualifies and knocks Chelsea out of European competitions

Sunderland defeated Chelsea 2-1 this Sunday (24) and secured a place in the next edition of the Europa League.

With the result, Sunderland became only the fifth club in the history of the Premier League to qualify for European competitions in the first season after gaining access.

The first goal came in the 25th minute, on a volley from Trai Hume. In the final stage, an own goal by Malo Gusto increased the home team's advantage. Cole Palmer scored for Chelsea, who also had Wesley Fofana sent off.

The victory took Sunderland to seventh place in the table. Bournemouth also secured a place in the Europa League after drawing 1-1 with Nottingham Forest, while Chelsea finished out of European competition.

The place for the Europa Conference League went to Brighton, who finished in eighth place after losing 3-0 to Manchester United.

United, already guaranteed in the next Champions League, once again featured Bruno Fernandes, who scored a goal and his 21st assist of the season, a new Premier League record.

In addition to Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City and Aston Villa had already confirmed their presence in the Champions League. Liverpool also secured qualification after drawing 1-1 with Brentford.

Crystal Palace, in turn, can still win a place in the Europa League if they beat Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final, on Wednesday (27), in Leipzig.
