Violent storms and heavy rains that hit several regions of China left at least 15 dead and hundreds injured, in addition to causing the evacuation of tens of thousands of people, according to a report released this Tuesday (7) by state media.
The province of Hubei, in the central region of the country, was severely punished by storms and violent winds that caused 11 deaths and left a missing, according to the official China Nova agency.
The strong winds, with an intensity of 13 on the Beaufort scale, lasted more than four hours on Monday night (6) and hit the cities of Huangshi, Huanggang, Ezhou and Xianning. Footage from state broadcaster CCTV showed rescue workers in Huanggang examining the cabin of a truck destroyed by steel sheets coming from the roof of a building, as well as a white car hurled into a lamp post.
In Ezhou, CCTV reported that 5 people died as a result of a tornado overnight. (See video above)
Experts warn that tornadoes are extremely rare in Hubei, an important industrial, automotive and technological hub. According to Wang Xiaoling, an expert from the provincial meteorological department, the last record of the phenomenon in the region had occurred in May 2021.
Among the recorded phenomena, two tornadoes caused great devastation in the province, with winds of up to 149 km/h that overturned cars, tore roofs off buildings and left a trail of twisted metal.

Warning of more storms and evacuations
The National Meteorological Center said northeastern Hubei, the provinces of Guangdong, Hainan, Jilin, Shandong, Liaoning and the Guangxi region should prepare for more heavy to torrential rains this Tuesday (7).
Guangxi (South): Four people died and eight were missing due to extreme rainfall and flooding that forced the evacuation of more than 50,000 people, according to CCTV. The region is still recovering from Typhoon Maysak, which killed at least four people in the capital Nanning in recent days, and is awaiting rainfall volumes of up to 260 mm, with a risk of landslides.
Gansu (West): A landslide in a mountainous area swept 33 people away by the currents in the early hours of the morning, leaving 16 missing.
Faced with the flood scenario, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for "all-out efforts" to rescue affected populations.
In addition to internal storms, authorities are monitoring super typhoon Bavi, which is moving across the Pacific towards Taiwan and is expected to hit the east coast of China later this week. On Monday, the storm registered winds of up to 290 km/h as it passed through Guam, Tinian, Saipan and Rota.
