STF demands Union plan to remove invaders from indigenous land in Pará

The president of the STF (Federal Supreme Court), minister Edson Fachin, gave the Union 90 days to present a plan to remove occupants from the Cachoeira Seca Indigenous Land, in Pará. The decision comes amid warnings about the increase in deforestation and the presence of invaders in the territory of the Arara people.

The plan must be prepared by Funai (National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples), by Incra (National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform) and other federal bodies.

The document will have to detail the steps for removing the occupants from the area, including an execution schedule, inspection measures and actions aimed at protecting the local indigenous people.

Fachin stated that the government's delay in removing invaders from the Cachoeira Seca Indigenous Land has worsened the situation in the region. According to the minister, the lack of action contributed to the spread of deforestation and illegal activities that put the territory and the Arara people at risk.

Data cited in the decision indicate that the area recorded an increase of around 45% in deforestation between 2023 and 2024 and accumulates more than 74 thousand hectares deforested, ranking among the most deforested indigenous lands in the Legal Amazon.

The minister also ordered the Union to present biannual reports on the implementation of measures and establish a permanent committee to monitor actions aimed at protecting isolated and recently contacted indigenous peoples.
