Stefan Olsdal reveals behind the scenes of the historical recreation of Placebo's first album after 30 years
Bassist Stefan Olsdal opened up behind the scenes of one of the most ambitious projects in Placebo's history during an interview with Você Mais Discos Que Amigos. The musician spoke about the decision to revisit the band's debut album, released three decades ago, using modern resources to present a new experience to fans.
The project was called "Placebo RE:CREATED" and aims to update the sound of the original album without losing the characteristics that transformed the album into a landmark of alternative rock in the 1990s.
According to Olsdal, the group had access to the original recordings made on analog tape, a very limited format when compared to current technologies. At the time, the band needed to work with only 24 channels available to record all the instruments and vocals.
From these historic tapes, the musicians decided to preserve the original performances, but add new sound elements developed over more than 30 years of career. Among the new features are synthesizers, electronic textures and production resources that were not available during the original recordings.
During the interview, Stefan also recalled the impact Placebo had when it appeared on the British scene. At a time dominated by traditional Britpop, the band drew attention for their provocative aesthetics, their challenging stance and for discussing issues of gender identity openly.
The musician highlighted that the group always tried to follow its own path, avoiding fitting into the standards that dominated the music industry at the time.
Another topic discussed was the influence of Robert Smith, from The Cure, on Placebo's trajectory. Olsdal commented on his admiration for the artist's career and spoke about the lessons he learned observing one of the biggest names in alternative music.
The interview also explored topics such as artistic aging, creativity, technological evolution and the band's future, offering fans an in-depth look at the internal processes that helped build Placebo's identity over three decades.
