Relatives of victim seek information about inmates after clash left 25 victims

At least 25 inmates and four guards died during violent clashes on the night of last Sunday (5) in a prison in the region of Sri Lanka's capital, Colombo, a medical source said on Monday (6).
More than 100 inmates were hospitalized after the riot, AFP told AFP. director of Negombo hospital, Pushpa Gamlath. "Some of the victims had gunshot wounds," he added.

The unrest began on Sunday night, when two groups of inmates, described as rival drug traffickers, began a confrontation. The prison houses almost 10,000 inmates.
"The situation got completely out of control," a police officer who requested anonymity told AFP. "Four guards were murdered while trying to put an end to the disturbances," he added.
As reports of the clashes spread throughout the prison, inmates from an adjacent section climbed to the roof and demanded their release. The police reported that part of the roof collapsed and some women were injured.
Police officers were called in as reinforcements, but did not act inside the penitentiary complex, in front of which family members of the inmates gathered.
