SRB wants analysis on exclusion of meat from Brazil in the European Union

The Brazilian Rural Society (SRB) expressed concern about the exclusion of Brazil from the list of countries able to export meat and other products of animal origin to the European Union from September this year. In a note released this Sunday (07), the entity defended an in-depth analysis of the reasons that led to the decision and asked for clarification on compliance with the requirements established by the European bloc.

According to the SRB, the moment requires less the search for those responsible and more the understanding of the factors that prevented the country from fully complying with the new rules related to the use of antimicrobials in animal production.

"The main objective must be to identify points that require correction, improve processes and strengthen the country's capacity to respond to the growing demands of international markets", stated the entity in a note.

The restriction is related to a European regulation approved in 2019 and supplemented in 2023, which determined that exporting countries must prove regulatory equivalence in relation to the use of antimicrobials in animal production. The deadline for adaptation has always been set for September 2026.

Sector questions delay in implementation
For SRB, Brazil has the technical conditions to comply with the requirements imposed by the European Union. The entity highlights that the Animal Products Inspection Service (SISPOA) has a consolidated history of credibility and that the self-control mechanisms adopted by the private sector represent an advance in efficiency and transparency.

In the case of cattle farming, the entity recalls that the country has been operating for years with the Brazilian System of Individual Identification of Cattle and Buffaloes (SISBOV), used for animal traceability.

In the organization's assessment, the adaptations necessary to meet the additional requirements of the European Union were technically feasible, which makes it necessary to understand why the required steps were not completed within the expected schedule.
