The streaming platform Spotify announced a new licensing agreement with Universal Music Group (UMG), which will enable the development of a new generative artificial intelligence tool focused on music. The new feature will pave the way for service subscribers to create covers and remixes of tracks by artists and composers linked to the label using AI technology within the application itself.

The announcement was made this Thursday (21), during Spotify's Investor Day presentation. The information is from the American magazine Billboard.

According to the companies, future AI models will be made available to premium subscribers as an additional paid feature, although there is no official launch date yet.

The initiative aims to increase interaction between artists and fans, in addition to generating another source of income for participating musicians and composers.

Artists' participation will be optional. Alex Norström, co-CEO of Spotify, highlighted that covers and remixes made by fans represent "the next step" for the platform. According to him, the proposal will be based on consent, credit and remuneration for artists and composers involved.

Lucian Grainge, CEO of UMG, stated that the initiative seeks to strengthen the relationship between artists and the public through "responsible" AI.

"The most valuable innovations in the music industry always bring artists and fans closer together," said Grainge. "This pioneering AI-powered superfan initiative aims to support human creativity, deepen fan relationships, and create additional revenue opportunities for artists and songwriters."

Spotify also announced the "Reserved" feature, aimed at "reserving" tickets for artists' most engaged fans on the Premium service.
