SP records 25% increase in arrests for domestic violence in 2026

Data released by the SSP (Secretariat of Public Security) shows that 9,183 offenders were arrested or apprehended for domestic violence throughout the state of São Paulo between January and May this year. The number represents an increase of 25.5% compared to the same period in 2025, when 7,317 cases were recorded.

According to the ministry, in May this year, 1,843 arrests and seizures in the act were recorded, an increase of 35.6% compared to the same month last year, when 1,359 cases were recorded.

When separated by regions within the state, the increase in arrests and seizures is also noticeable. In the capital of São Paulo and Greater São Paulo, for example, the number of offenders arrested in the act went from 2,130 in the first five months of 2025 to 2,759 this year.

In the interior of São Paulo, between January and May this year, 6,402 arrests were recorded. Last year, considering the same period, 5,184 attackers were arrested or apprehended by security forces, a number equivalent to an increase of 23.5%.

Still in May this year, the state of São Paulo recorded a drop in feminicide cases compared to the same period of the previous year. There were 18 incidents recorded, eight fewer than the 26 recorded in May 2025.

According to the secretariat, the numbers are the result of actions carried out to expand the protection network for women. In January this year, for example, the government of São Paulo entered into a partnership with the transport app 99 to offer free and safe travel to women victims of violence who call 190.

Thus, when experiencing some type of violence and calling Copom (Military Police Operations Center), the victim would be directed to the Lilac Cabin.

For delegate Cristiane Braga, coordinator of the state's Women's Defense Police Stations, interrupting the cycle of violence depends on reporting and quick access to protection services. "The sooner this victim can access service channels and report the aggressor, the greater the chances of interrupting this cycle and avoiding a tragedy," he said.
