Sony will stop producing physical discs (CDs) for new video games for its PlayStation consoles from January 2028, when the titles will only be distributed in digital format, the Japanese group announced.
"The production of physical discs for all new games released on PlayStation consoles will be stopped from January 2028. 2028", Sony said in a post on the company's blog.
The company stated that the change "will not affect games that have already been released or will be released before January 2028 in physical format".
The announcement comes just a few months before the exclusively digital launch of Grand Theft Auto (GTA) VI, which could become the best-selling cultural product in history.
On social media, some users criticized that the absence of a physical disc would eliminate the market for second hand for this title.
"It is a natural evolution for Sony Interactive Entertainment, which adapts to consumer trends, as the general preference for digital media far exceeds that of physical discs", declared the company.
