Silage strengthens cattle nutrition during dry periods

The arrival of winter and the absence of rain also bring about the dry period, when the pasture dries up and the animals have greater difficulty feeding themselves. This is when silage favors weight gain and milk production.
In Pederneiras (SP), livestock farmer Paulo Vitor Garcia uses bagged corn sealing, storing the grain under tarpaulins with a capacity of up to 100 tons.
40% of his hectares are used for planting the cereal which, according to Garcia, is the most efficient grain for livestock. The sealing can be stored for long periods of time, which brings security to the livestock farmer and avoids selling animals in winter and dry pasture periods.
During the season, with shorter days, it is common for cattle to lose weight. Zootechnician Márcio Luiz de Oliveira talks about the importance of silage for cattle, a ruminant species that needs fiber for good energy production.
In Ocauçu (SP) the cattle receive a mixture of corn dough, sorghum and peanut shells and when going to the trough it is diluted in water. The technique is called DDG, an acronym in English for "dry grains and distillery".
Cattle rancher Dárcia Fiabane, reports on the importance of ensuring energy to maintain the animals' health, as pasture alone is insufficient at times of greatest energy consumption.
