Short film shot in São Paulo wins prize at Cannes Film Festival

Short film shot in the center of São Paulo will be the only Brazilian film at the Cannes Festival
The short film Laser-Gato, by 30-year-old São Paulo filmmaker Lucas Acher, won this Thursday (21), the La Cinef category at the Cannes Festival.
The category is considered a showcase for new talent at the awards and has already revealed filmmakers who later went on to occupy a prominent place worldwide.
The award was awarded by a jury made up of Spanish director Carla Simón and other filmmakers and actors, during a ceremony held in the festival's Buñuel room, followed by the screening of the winning films.
In this edition, the selection brought together 19 films chosen from 2,747 entries sent by 662 film schools around the world.
The director of Laser-Gato was the only Brazilian to compete in the category in 2026.
"It's a very intimate film, made in São Paulo, a very peculiar city, which is in constant transformation, and, suddenly, he's at this giant festival", said the director after the official selection. "Cannes has always been a dream, an almost abstract idea. When it happens, it seems a little unreal," says Acher.

The film
Laser-Gato follows a teenager who crosses São Paulo during a single night after a game with a laser gets out of control. The narrative focuses on a fragmented urban drift and avoids classic structures, in which the city becomes an active element of the cinematic experience.
The architecture of downtown São Paulo, the urban voids, the artificial lighting and the early morning noises shape the rhythm of the film, creating an atmosphere that oscillates between suspense, humor and strangeness.
With the participation of actors Gabriel Brennecke and Gilda Nomacce, Laser-Gato was produced by Bruto Films and filmed in real locations in the capital of São Paulo.
