Ship is hit by unknown projectile in Persian Gulf, group says

A cargo ship sailing in the northern Persian Gulf was hit by an unknown projectile, according to a UK maritime safety organization.

The case was recorded about 64 kilometers southeast of the port of Umm Qasr, in Iraq, reported the UKMTO (United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Center), which monitors occurrences around the world.

"A cargo ship was transiting the Arabian Gulf when a large explosion occurred after being hit by an unknown projectile on its starboard side," he added, referring to the maritime region also known as the Persian Gulf.

"The UKMTO is unaware of any environmental impact at this time. Authorities are investigating," he said.

In the three months to 26 May, the UKMTO said it had received 52 reports of incidents affecting vessels operating in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman.

Of these, 28 were reports of attacks and 22 of suspicious activity. Sporadic attacks on ships in the Gulf have caused most companies to suspend operations in the region.
