Shakira remembers her divorce from Piqué: "Dark moment"
Singer Shakira, 49, made a rare comment about her former relationship with football player Gerard Piqué, 39. In an interview with The Times newspaper, the artist described the divorce as "the darkest moment" of her life.
Shakira and Piqué separated in 2022 after 11 years of relationship. At the time, a betrayal by the player became public.
To The Times, Shakira says she has "a lot of gratitude in her heart" for Piqué, but describes the troubled phase she went through with the divorce. "The darkest moment, when I saw the dissolution of my family, the family I dreamed of keeping forever", he says. Shakira and Piqué are parents to Milan, 13, and Sasha, 11.
She also says that her father, William, then 91, had traveled to Barcelona to support her during the separation, but suffered a serious fall and had to be hospitalized.
"I went through so much pain, but it made me, perhaps in an unexpected way, a wiser person - or stronger, at least. They say that what doesn't kill us makes us stronger, and it's true. It's incredible to discover that human beings have a resilience that we can draw on at any time in our lives. Sometimes it's through difficulties and pain that we discover how strong we can be. Suffering sometimes makes us better people, makes us value friends and support," he says.
Recently, Shakira made history by performing a mega show on Copacabana beach, in Rio de Janeiro. This week, the singer released the video for "Dai Dai", her official song for the 2026 World Cup.
