Serena Williams withdraws from Wimbledon doubles due to knee injury

Former world number 1 Serena Williams announced this Saturday (4) that she is out of the Wimbledon doubles competition after suffering a knee injury during her debut singles match.

"I'm heartbroken to have to give up doubles. Returning to compete was a gift, and the opportunity to play again alongside @venuswilliams meant a lot to me," wrote the 44-year-old American in a post on social media.

"I did everything I could, but unfortunately my knee isn't ready to compete yet."

Serena's return to Grand Slam tournaments after four years ended with a defeat to Australian Maya Joint by 2 sets to 1, with partials of 6/3, 6/7 (6) and 6/3, last Tuesday.

Serena and Venus Williams received an invitation from the organization to compete in the doubles and would debut against Solana Sierra and Camila Osorio. The sisters won six titles in the sport in the traditional English tournament.

After being eliminated in the singles draw, Serena revealed that she had felt pain in her right knee at the end of the first set, but stated that she would do everything she could to be ready to return to the court.

In the new publication, the American also thanked the tournament director, Jamie Baker, and the organization for their support during her recovery.

"Thank you to the fans for your incredible support and for making this comeback so meaningful. All I can say is, keep an eye out for a city near you," he concluded.

Before Wimbledon, Serena competed in preparatory tournaments alongside Canadian Victoria Mboko, at the Queen's Club WTA, and Czech Karolína Muchová, at the Berlin Open, without managing to advance in the competitions.
