The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, said this Saturday (27) that he will leave office in the coming weeks and announced early presidential and parliamentary elections.

"I will be president for just a few more weeks and then I will resign," Vučić told supporters during a pro-government rally in the capital, Belgrade.
Vučić's second and final term would only end in mid-2027.

A member of the right-wing Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), Vučić has been the country's main political figure for more than a decade.
He was prime minister between 2014 and 2017 and assumed the presidency after winning the 2017 elections, being re-elected in 2022.
During his period in power, Vučić led negotiations to bring Serbia closer to the European Union, while maintaining close relations with Russia and China.
Protests against the government
Vučić's announcement comes amid to the biggest wave of protests faced by his government in more than a decade in power.
The demonstrations began after the collapse of the roof of the Novi Sad railway station, in November 2024, which killed 15 people, but quickly began to incorporate broader criticisms of the government, with accusations of corruption, lack of transparency, failures in the supervision of public works and authoritarianism.
Led by students, the movement organized successive acts across the country, including a demonstration that brought together around 300,000 people in March 2025, the largest in Serbia's history.
This month, tens of thousands of people returned to the streets of Belgrade to demand early elections and put pressure on Vučić.
