Sequel to "The Grinch" is in production and will see Jim Carrey return

A sequel to the 2000s Christmas hit "The Grinch" is being produced by Universal. The sequel will also be directed by Ron Howard and will bring back Jim Carrey as the grumpy Dr. Seuss character, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Released just before Thanksgiving 2000, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" was the highest-grossing film of the year in the United States, grossing US$260 million.

Jim Carrey had one of the most successful careers in Hollywood in the 1990s and had already said publicly that he would be open to playing the Grinch again. Despite his desire, the actor opened up about how laborious the makeup process was in the first film and that, this time, he would like to use motion capture technology to project the character's green, furry skin.

"The problem is, on the day of the shoot, I had a lot of makeup on and I could barely breathe. It was an extremely excruciating process. The kids were in my head the whole time. 'It's for the kids. It's for the kids. It's for the kids.' And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could have the freedom to do other things. Anything is possible in this world," Carrey said during ComicBook.com 2024.

At the time, the film went on to win an Oscar in the Best Makeup category, for Rick Baker and Gail Rowell-Ryan, who transformed Carrey for the role. The process took around eight hours a day, and the actor has already confessed to having thought about quitting on the first day of production and returning his $20 million fee.

The story of the Grinch dates back to 1957, when Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) published the story inspired by his dissatisfaction with the "hijacking" of Christmas by rampant consumerism. The story tells the story of the Grinch's journey to ruin Christmas for the residents of Quemlândia by stealing their gifts. CBS produced an animated special in 1966, with Boris Karloff voicing the narrator and the Grinch. Co-director Chuck Jones chose to make the Grinch green, a change from the book's black and white.

In 2018, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" was adapted into the 2018 animation called "The Grinch", released by Universal, and which became another huge box office success.

Universal has not yet released further information about the filming and release dates for the sequel. CEO Susan Brandt will oversee the project for Dr. Seuss Enterprises, in partnership with the production company.
