The spread of fake news grows exponentially during events that attract global attention, flooding social networks with false posts, which spread as if they were real scenes. This phenomenon has been repeating itself after the two earthquakes this Wednesday (24) in Venezuela.
The magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes occurred less than a minute apart and left more than 500 dead and thousands injured. Both true and impressive records of the tragedy and false publications - which share, out of context, old scenes recorded in other countries - went viral.

▶ What does the video show? A man recorded the moment he descends the stairs of his building after the tremor. With each floor, you can see the trails of destruction increasing. The caption of one of the posts reads: "A Venezuelan filmed himself climbing the stairs of his building during the two earthquakes that hit Venezuela." When the resident reaches the ground floor of the building, the destruction is total: the floor is flooded, and the entrance is filled with rubble.
✅ Why IS IT #FACT? The recording was made by a resident of Caracas. Fato ou Fake submitted the video to artificial intelligence detection tools, which did not indicate the use of this resource.

▶ What does the video show? Aerial images of debris on the streets and destroyed buildings in a mountainous region went viral on social media this Thursday (25).
✅ Why IS IT #FACT? The video was recorded in the city of La Guaira, the city most affected by the disaster, and verified by the Reuters news agency using satellite images.

▶ What does the video show? The content went viral on the internet hours after Wednesday's earthquake. One of the captions says: "Camera captures elderly couple holding hands during earthquakes in Venezuela." In the images, a man gets up from the sofa when he feels the first tremor, and hugs his wife, who was in an adapted chair, while the house shakes.
✅ Why IS IT #FACT? The images were reproduced by several media outlets in Venezuela and Spain.

What does the video show? The post, which went viral on X hours after the earthquakes, has the following caption: "Tsunami in La Guaira, Venezuela, after the earthquakes of magnitudes 7.1 and 7.5 that occurred today." The recording shows vessels trying to cross large waves in a port region, amid the screams of people watching the scene from a higher point. Throughout the record, the waves reach the pier and cover the entire ground.
⚠ Why is it #FAKE? Although it is real - and not content created by artificial intelligence (AI) -, the video has no relation to the phenomenon in Venezuela. It was actually filmed in Japan on March 11, 2011, when a 9.0 magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami and became the largest tremor in the country's history. What does the video show? It was published in X the day after the double earthquake in Venezuela. On the same date, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck California, in the United States, and a 7.2 tremor was felt in northeastern Japan. The post has the following caption, in Turkish: "While earthquakes of magnitude 7.5 in Venezuela, 6.9 in Japan and 7.8 in Indonesia scared millions of people, everyone ran outside in desperation to save their lives. But this woman, who had mobility limitations, was left alone at home. Urgent."
⚠ Why Is it #FAKE? In fact, the video shows the moment a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the island of Mindanao, in the Philippines, on the night of June 7 this year, Brasília time. The tragedy left 37 people dead, 456 injured and 4 missing. In fact, it captures the collapse of a Jollibee chain restaurant, after a 7.8 scale earthquake hit the Philippines in June this year. Mindanao.
According to the "Reuters" news agency, which broadcast the video, the filming took place in the city of General Santos. The tremor was felt on June 8 on the southern coast of Mindanao, in the Philippines.

⚠ Why is it #FAKE? Although it is real -- and not content created by artificial intelligence (AI) --, the video has no relation to the tremor felt in Venezuela.
In fact, it depicts the controlled demolition of a residential building in the city of Karamamaras, Turkey, in June 2023. According to reports from the Turkish state news agency "Anadolu" and the website, the demolitions were led by the government, after Turkey suffered an earthquake on February 6, 2023, compromising structures in central provinces of the country.
