See the exact moment the first earthquake hits Venezuela

A security camera recorded the exact moment when the first earthquake, of the two tremors that shook Venezuela last week, hit the state of La Guaira on Wednesday (24).

In the images, the ground shaking causes people to run from a building as the intensity rapidly increases, while a building collapses in the background.

Several people lose their balance and fall while trying to seek safety amid the tremor.

According to reports, the north-central region of Venezuela was hit by a rare "seismic doublet". A preliminary tremor of magnitude 7.2 occurred at around 6:04 pm (local time), followed, just 39 seconds later, by the main tremor of magnitude 7.5.

The consecutive earthquakes caused widespread damage, led to building evacuations, and triggered emergency response operations across the affected region.

The earthquakes left 2,295 people dead, said the president of the country's National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, on Wednesday (1st).

In addition, 11,267 people were injured and left homeless as a result of the earthquakes, Rodríguez said in a statement on state television.

He also reported that more than four thousand international rescuers and 26 thousand Venezuelan personnel are continuing search efforts.

There have been 782 aftershocks since June 24.

UNHCR (UN Refugee Agency), which coordinates the protection and shelter response, warned on Tuesday (30) that the humanitarian situation in the affected areas "has deteriorated rapidly".

The agency said there are "serious food shortages, the collapse of basic services and an increase in protection risks for the displaced population."
