See in numbers how the SpaceX IPO made Musk a trillionaire
SpaceX's long-awaited initial public offering (IPO) has officially launched.
Wall Street celebrated, ordinary investors placed so many buy orders that it caused temporary outages, and the richest man in the world became the planet's first trillionaire.
Shares in Elon Musk's rocket and artificial intelligence company closed at $160.95, up 19.22% from its IPO price of $135.
Here's the biggest IPO in history, broken down in numbers.
- US$2 trillion: SpaceX's current market value makes it the sixth largest publicly traded company in the US as of Friday (12).
- US$1.26 trillion: Musk's fortune makes him the world's first trillionaire. He owns almost half of SpaceX's shares.
- 1 billion: The number of SpaceX shares that Musk's salary package will allow him to buy at a relatively low price. But this will only happen if SpaceX has a colony on Mars with 1 million people.
- 500,000: The number of orders to buy SpaceX shares that Fidelity received in less than an hour. A record number of retail investors, everyday people who trade stocks as opposed to professional companies and institutions, bought shares.
- 22,000: The number of SpaceX employees. "I love the amazing people at SpaceX, I have no words to describe it," Musk wrote in a post on 135.
- 3: Large initial public offerings (IPOs) related to artificial intelligence are expected this year. SpaceX was first, and OpenAI and Anthropic are expected to follow suit.
- 2: People dressed as astronauts were on the Nasdaq balcony as trading closed.
- 1: SpaceX is among the largest initial public offerings (IPOs) in history.
