Scaloni completes 100 games in charge of Argentina against Cape Verde

Lionel Scaloni will complete 100 matches in charge of Argentina this Friday (3), when the current world champions face Cape Verde in the round of 32 of the World Cup. The brand reinforces one of the most successful periods in the history of the Argentine national team.

Former right-back, Scaloni took charge of the team at the end of 2018, following Argentina's disappointing World Cup campaign under Jorge Sampaoli. Before that, he had worked in the national team's youth categories and as Sampaoli's assistant coach.

"I'm the same as I was on the first day, in exactly the same way", said Scaloni after the 3-1 victory over Jordan, last Saturday (27).

"Every time we step onto the field we feel something inside. There is no such thing as a calm game. We make it that way because we live every match that way. The day that stops happening, it will be a problem," added the 48-year-old coach.

Initially hired on an interim basis, Scaloni changed Argentina's recent history. Under his command, the team won the 2021 Copa América, ending a 28-year drought without important titles, in addition to the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa América.

With his 100th game, the coach approaches the record of Guillermo Stábile, who led the Argentine national team in 124 matches. Scaloni has already surpassed two other world champion coaches: César Luis Menotti and Carlos Bilardo, both with 79 games in charge of the Albiceleste.

Solid campaign in the group stage
Argentina reaches the knockout stage on the strength of an almost perfect campaign in the group stage, with victories over Algeria (3-0), Austria (2-0) and Jordan (3-1).

"We are in a good moment and now another stage of the World Cup begins. It's the best part of the competition", said Scaloni.

The coach's work is also recognized by opponents. Before the duel between Argentina and Algeria, coach Vladimir Petkovic, who led Scaloni at Lazio, praised the Argentine.

"It's a great pleasure to meet him again. I have a great relationship with Leo and I hope it continues like this after the match," he said.

In 99 matches ahead of Argentina, Scaloni has 72 wins, 18 draws and just nine defeats.
