"Sausage Galaxy": collision that reshaped the Milky Way must repeat

A drastic collision gave rise to the Milky Way, according to astronomers from the University of Cambridge and the Center for Computational Astrophysics at the Flatiron Institute, both in the United Kingdom and the United States, respectively.

The dwarf galaxy that collided with ours, about 8 to 10 billion years ago - decisive for galactic history - became known as the "Sausage Galaxy", shaping both the inner bulge and the outer stellar halo of what we know today.

Recent data indicate that a similar remodeling process is expected in the future, due to the collision trajectory of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), which is expected to merge with our galaxy in approximately two billion years.

And what is the relationship?
The LMC is the largest current satellite in the Milky Way and is in its first passage through the pericenter - the point of an orbit closest to the central body in astronomy - and just like the "Sausage", its high mass is already deforming the galactic halo and altering the orbit of stars and stellar streams.

The relationship between the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Sausage Galaxy (Gaia Sausage) lies in the fact that they are the two most significant collision events for the structure of the Milky Way, representing, respectively, the past and future of galactic evolution.

Comparison
Although the Sausage Galaxy was once a massive object, with more than 10 billion solar masses in gas, stars, and dark matter, the LMC is considered to be even more massive, with total mass estimates between 100 and 200 billion solar masses.

The collision with the Sausage Galaxy generated the stellar component called Splash, composed of stars from the original disk that were "kicked" into chaotic, radial orbits.

Currently, the LMC is causing a similar phenomenon called reflex movement, where the central regions of the Milky Way move in relation to the outer halo, creating asymmetries in the density and speed of stars, in a way analogous to the disturbances left by the "Sausage".

The main temporal relationship is that the LMC will repeat the fate of the Sausage Galaxy. While the "Sausage" debris is now scattered around us as evidence of an ancient collision, the LMC will continue to orbit our galaxy until its inevitable merger in about two billion years.

This future event will drastically increase the mass and metallicity of the stellar halo, completing a cycle of transformations begun billions of years ago by the Sausage Galaxy.
