Saquarema hosts WSL stage with shows from Cidade Negra and Buchecha
Praia de Itaúna, in Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, hosts the sixth stage of the Championship Tour of the World Surf League (WSL) between the 19th and 27th of June. One day before the start of the competition, the traditional Brazilian surfing spot will also host the WSL Sunset, a beach-based festival that mixes music and sport.
Among the main attractions of the event are the Cidade Negra and Buchecha shows. The singer, who became known nationally in the duo with Claudinho and scored hits such as "Fico Assim Sem Você", will be responsible for opening the program, which takes place from 5pm to 11pm (Brasília time).
The festival will also mark Cidade Negra's return to the stage. Led by Toni Garrido and Bino Farias, the band returns to the road with the "De Agora em Diante" tour, which celebrates the 30th anniversary of the album "Sobre Todas as Forças".
Other names are also part of the program, including singer-songwriter Veigh, one of the most popular artists in the country on streaming platforms.
"Music is part of surfing culture and has become a trademark of the WSL experience, which each year seeks to innovate and delight with new attractions. We are completing 50 years of competitive surfing and projecting something great to make it a historic spectacle in and out of the water", said Ivan Martinho, president of WSL in Latin America.
Stage in New Zealand remains undefined
Before embarking for El Salvador, stage of the fifth stop of the Championship Tour, the surfing elite is still waiting for the conclusion of the fourth stage held in Raglan, New Zealand, known for its traditional left-hand waves.
The stage, which is already in the round of 16, was suspended for three days due to unfavorable sea conditions in Manu Bay. If the situation improves, the final could be played this weekend. The event window closes on the 25th.
Among the Brazilians eliminated in the men's category are Samuel Pupo, Mateus Herdy and João Chianca, aka Chumbinho.
Chumbinho fell in the first round of the qualifiers when facing his compatriot Filipe Toledo, who had a great performance and recorded the highest total of the day.
Samuel Pupo, in turn, was surpassed by Cole Houshmand after suffering a turnaround in the final moments of a heat marked by a lack of waves.
Matthew Herdy said goodbye in the second phase after being defeated by Leonardo Fioravanti in the Italian's last wave.
On the other hand, Gabriel Medina, Filipe Toledo, Alejo Muniz, Yago Dora, Ítalo Ferreira and Miguel Pupo advanced to the round of 16, a phase that will still be played in the men's group.
For women, the round of 16 heats have already been held. Luana Silva qualified, but was eliminated by Australian Tyler Wright in a tight duel, marked by controversies involving refereeing and a fall in the last maneuver. With the result, the Brazilian fell to second place in the world rankings.
Brazilians at the top
In the men's ranking of the Championship Tour, Brazil remains among the protagonists. Gabriel Medina leads the classification, Miguel Pupo appears in second place and Yago Dora occupies fourth place. In the female category, Luana Silva is the vice-leader of the circuit.
