The city of São Joaquim, in the Serra de Santa Catarina, recorded the lowest temperature of the year in Brazil at around 6am this Tuesday (12).

According to Epagri/Ciram, an organization that monitors weather conditions in the state, the thermometers registered -4.61ºC in the Vale do Caminho da Neve region, about 3 kilometers from the center.

The condition is associated with a mass of dry, cold air of polar origin. On Monday (11), the municipality had recorded -2ºC.

Although the system will gradually begin to lose strength over the next few days, the early hours of Wednesday (13) and Thursday (14) should still maintain the low temperature pattern.

São Joaquim is located at an altitude of approximately 1,360 meters above sea level. The predominant climate is cold and very variable. From April onwards, thermometers plummet, with 0ºC being a common temperature.
